Landranger Series

Scale of 1:50 000 (1.25 inches to 1 mile, 2 cm to 1 km). These maps show much more detail and are the ones to get if you really want to explore back lanes. 24 maps cover Wales and the Welsh Borders, each costing between £5.50 and £7. Obviously, you don't have to buy that many to find your way around. You could quite happily spend all week cycling on just one or two maps.

Cycling Guide Books:-

The Philip's Cycle Tours series is probably the best of the cycletouring route guide books. Each spiral-bound book contains about 24 one-day routes (mostly on-road) based on the O.S. 1:50 000 maps. Be aware that information can change between the time a book is written and the time you read it.

Only the North Wales edition is easily available. Second-hand copies of the other two occasionally are offered on Amazon. "South Wales" (ISBN 0 600 58846 7), covers south, west and mid Wales. "Gloucestershire and Hereford" (ISBN 0 600 58665 0), covers the southern Welsh Borders. [My partner co-wrote the "Around Birmingham" edition which covers the Midlands, just to the east of the Welsh Borders]

For long distance routes see Sustrans' Lon Las Cymru (from North Wales to South Wales) and Celtic Trail (along the south coast of Wales) guides.

It's All About The Bike

– The Pursuit of Happiness On Two Wheels

The story of a journey to design and build a dream bike. En route, journalist Robert Penn explores the culture, science and history of the bicycle. From Stoke-on-Trent, where an artisan hand builds his frame, to California, home of the mountain bike, where Robert tracks down the perfect wheels, via Portland, Milan and Coventry, birthplace of the modern bicycle, this is the narrative of our love affair with cycling.
